Poor Little Guy!

Little man had his 12 month check up (a little earlier then he was supposed to because his doc was gonna be outta town) and unfortunately it didn't go as smoothly as I had hopped. They weighed him he's 19 pounds and 28.5 in long. The doctor came in the room to check him and ask the normal questions they ask at every visit. He showed me his chart and said he's doing pretty good normal steady growth for him. Then he was going over how much food and milk does he get a day. Once I told him he's still pretty much exclusively nursing and not really interested in food yet (he might take a small taste of something or he just doesn't want anything to do with any food) he gave me this are you serious what the hell is wrong with you look. That's when he said oh no his weight is a little low, he needs more calories, he should be sleeping straight threw the night not waking at all to eat. He told me not to breastfeed him until he's ate food first and then I could give him whole milk or nurse if I wanted to. After that he asked if I had any concerns. I brought up that he's not crawling yet or walking (I'm not really to concerned with it though he's right on trace with everything and he can get from one spot to the next he's recently been trying to pull up on things to I just figure he will when he's good and ready to). The doctor checked him out and said his tone seems just fine and he tries to take steps when you stand him up and hold his hands. So he said to bring him back in 1 month to see if he's made any progress and to check his weight. After that It was time for the dreaded shots and finger prick. Poor little guy was a trooper though. The nurse came back in to tell me that his levels were 9.5 and they should be 10. They then sent me down to get blood work done (I felt so bad for this poor baby multiple shots, 2 finger pricks and now blood work). The lady was having trouble finding a good vein but stuck him any way and missed, she didn't end up getting any blood and so he has to go threw it again! I got a call from his doctors office the next day saying they never received anything yet. I told her what happened and that we need to go back, she got a little snotty with me and said we'll he needs it done sooner rather then later. I'm more than a little annoyed and pissed with the whole situation. Any way we went back this morning to try again it was a different person this time and he got it thankfully cause I wouldn't put him threw that a third time. I asked if there was a big difference doing it this way then a finger prick and he says no its pretty much the same thing. So I don't know why they had him get it done then. Little man's asleep in my arms now so I figured I would vent. Sorry this is so long sometimes I just ramble : )

  1. I hate it when they have to do pricks and sticks! I'm stopping by as one of the Co-hosts for Show Some Lovin with Modern Hippie Mama. Hope you'll make your way back around! Have a great week! Alexa at http://www.katbiggie.com (No Holding Back)

  3. I hate when they start digging around trying to find a vein. I would rather be poked in a different spot, than deal with they digging to find a vein. Your baby is a trooper, hopefully, all his tests come back good.

  4. Awww poor baby!! I hate when it's shot time for my little man. I fear it more than he does. I actually think that I feel it more than he does. It's got to be a mommy thing. I hope all is well with little man. He's a trooper! =)

  5. What an awful experience for you. I have two boys-one who I nursed and one who I couldn't. Both were always good eaters so I don't know what to tell you there. Have you tried trying to feed him food every few hours? Some babies like spicy food and can't stand the bland crap we give them. I didn't give either boy grains until later. Maybe he'll like avocado? Easy and high in fat? You could also try mixing some peas with organic coconut oil. Another healthy fat. Is there a La Leche League group near you? They can at least offer you moral support and facts to help you as well. My final suggestion is if he is with you all the time-let someone else take care of him for 1-2 hours. He'll get hungry and they can encourage him to crawl. It will take the pressure off of you and all kids behave differently for momma than others. Keep the faith-you have a crappy day!

    1. Thanks for the advice and ideas Corelia! My 2 older boys were nursed as well but they also ate regular table food. Neither of them like the baby food. I do try to offer him a variety of things except dairy. But I know some times it can take a lot of trying before they will eat it. Thanks again for the suggestions : )

  6. I am so glad I read your post. Your little guy is so similar to mine. My little guy will turn one year in 9 days. He is breastfed. It really irritates me that a doctor could say that your son should be sleeping through the night. My son has not yet slept through a night without waking to nurse. This is normal for breastfed babies, even at a year old. My son neither crawls or walks yet. He will push his body along the floor though and gets around quite well. All babies develop at different times. As for the feeding we tried rice cereal as our son's first food and he did not tolerate it well at all. So we started him on full fat yogurt and pureed fresh fruits and vegetables. Up until now he has only recently started to take food from our meals. He will eat banana, mango, watermelon, apricots as is.
My husband is a Pediatrician and he is happy with how our son is progressing.
As for the shots I always dread taking him. I feel so bad because the nurses administering the shots can be so rough at times. As soon as they are done I scoop my little guy up and I am out the door.
As long as your baby is active and happy then I wouldn't worry to much. You are his mom and moms know best :)

    1. Thanks so much for your input! I think our doctor is just not for breastfeeding. I completely agree every baby is different. My older 2 boys ate table food just fine. I know when he's ready he will : )
The nurses can be quite rough some times. Thanks again : )
